Interview with Niklas Adamsson, Regional President EMEA at Envirotainer: Cold Chain Innovation for Sustainability and Patient Impact

In this on-site interview at LogiPharma 2026 in Vienna, Niklas Adamsson, Regional President EMEA at Envirotainer, sits down with Linda Kim, Founder and CEO of Cold Chain Platform, to share how Envirotainer is driving more sustainable pharmaceutical logistics through advanced technology, data-driven decision-making, and live monitoring.

Niklas highlights Envirotainer’s active container portfolio, including RelEye® RKN and AirTainer RKN, and explains how the two solutions complement each other across different cold chain use cases. While RelEye® RKN offers long battery autonomy, AirTainer RKN stands out as the lightest active ULD on the market, with solar-panel capability for outdoor recharging. Niklas further emphasises that product innovation, supplier collaboration, and science-based targets are central to Envirotainer’s sustainability approach.

Niklas also highlights the importance of data-driven decision-making in building more sustainable pharma logistics. He explains how emissions calculation, shipment lane optimisation, partner selection, and live monitoring can help companies reduce the risk of temperature excursions and product loss, both of which are critical to sustainability and supply chain resilience.

The conversation also touches on Envirotainer’s partnership with Mercy Ships and its donation of temperature-controlled solutions to support medical care in challenging environments. For Niklas, the collaboration reflects Envirotainer’s passion for patients while showing how its solutions can perform reliably under demanding real-world conditions.

Linda:
Niklas, it's lovely to meet you again at LogiPharma 2026 in Vienna.

Niklas:
Thank you, Linda. It's been a pleasure meeting you again. Being here in Vienna, LogiPharma, it's the event of the year and everyone is here, the full industry is here, all suppliers are here, all customers are here and you are here. So it's an amazing event.

Linda:
Fantastic. And in your session at LogiPharma this year, you spoke about achieving carbon goals in pharma cold chain. So what is Envirotainer doing to support that?

Niklas:
For us at Envirotainer, sustainability is of course one of the key elements of our business. For the last couple of years it's been becoming more and more important for all of us in the industry, but not only as an industry, as humans, because it's really our responsibility to make the world better.

And I think one important part for us is really making sure that we have the most innovative solutions on the market. And I think if you look at our portfolio now, well, we have the RelEye® RKN, which was the latest active ULD in the market, but then we partnered up with Swiss Airtainer last year, enabling the AirTainer becoming part of the Envirotainer's portfolio. And that is the most lightest active ULD on the market.

So it's really about making sure that we bring the most sustainable products to the market, but also it's also how we operate. As a company, we have been setting one of the toughest science-based targets in our industry, and we are really on a good path in order to achieve that.

But it's also, we need to do that together with our suppliers and partners as well, because this is really about everyone taking part in this journey. But for us, this is really one of the key elements of our business.

Linda:
So you have RelEye® family and AirTainer together?

Niklas:
Exactly. So the AirTainer RKN, the RelEye® RKN, they really complement each other. The AirTainer being the lightest and the RelEye® having the longest battery autonomy. So it's really about which use case you need the container for.

Linda:
Also is it correct, AirTainer has some solar panels on top of the roof of the container?

Niklas:
Exactly. So the AirTainer RKN is really an amazing innovation. First of all, it's lightweight. Secondly, it's adding features which have not been seen in the market before, as you clearly pointed out. The solar panels on the top enabling it to really recharge itself when being outdoors.

Linda:
How important is data in helping companies to make better and more sustainable decisions in pharma cold chain?

Niklas:
I think it's extremely important for different reasons. First of all, it's about how you analyze and optimize your shipments. Selecting the right partners, selecting the right lanes, making sure that you minimize the emissions by using the right products and right partners.

But also during shipment, making sure that you avoid temperature excursions. Because temperature excursions and product loss is actually one of the key contributors to sustainability. So avoiding that is a huge step towards a more sustainable world.

So it's really about making sure that you analyze the situation, utilizing data, calculating the emissions, using the right technologies and products. But also during shipment, using live monitoring, visibility, making sure that the shipment goes exactly as it should.

Linda:
And earlier this year, you partnered with Mercy Ships by donating your temperature-controlled solutions. So what does that partnership mean to Envirotainer?

Niklas:
So Mercy Ships is an organization which really shares the DNA with Envirotainer. We have a passion for what we do. We have a passion for the patients. Mercy Ships is currently operating two vessels outside of Africa.

They've done more than 100,000 surgeries, making sure that people who have no easy access to hospitals are getting the access to surgery as they need to. And we as a company, we're providing them with temperature-controlled parcels to ensure that they can provide the services as needed, both when it comes to lab samples and medicines, etc.

So I think for us, it's also a clear testament that we're doing the right thing, passion for the patients, but also demonstrating that our products can really work in those really, really tough conditions.

Linda:
That's impressive. And finally, we are now day three at LogiPharma. So what has been your favorite part of LogiPharma so far?

Niklas:
I think being at LogiPharma is a way to really hear what everyone is talking about. And I think that this year, it's really about the very disruptive world we're living in, where everyone is suffering in their supply chains. I think that's really the topic which is on everyone's mind.

The last couple of years has been sustainability, AI, but I think in this world where we live now, where we stand, it's really about how do you as an organization make sure that you have a resilient supply chain, making sure that no matter what happens, because we know there's a disruptive situation in the world as we speak.

And I think everyone is really trying to figure out how to handle this. And I think that for me, it was a testament to what we do and our scale and our size. We're doing the right things because we see that partners are coming to us and because we can handle this disruptive situation.

And I think that's really the key takeaway from LogiPharma, kind of understanding how the organizations are trying to deal with this disruption.

Linda:
Niklas, thank you for taking your time. It's always lovely speaking with you.

Niklas:
Thank you very much, Linda.

Linda:
Thank you.
