Feather-Powered Innovation: Rethinking Cold Chain Packaging
PluumoPlus is the world’s first thermal packaging solution created from recycled feathers. This pioneering company, headquartered in London, UK, is leading the way in sustainable packaging for cold chain logistics. With a focus on circular economy principles, PluumoPlus provides a high-performance, eco-friendly alternative to traditional insulation materials.
This year marks the company’s debut at LogiPharma, where they showcased their groundbreaking technology. Founder Ryan Robinson delivered a presentation titled “Taking Flight: How Feather-Based Insulation is Redefining Thermal Packaging” on Day 2 (April 9th) at the Sustainability Zone.
The Feather as a Super Insulator
For any temperature-sensitive shipment, insulation materials are critical for slowing down the flow of heat transfer between the inside and outside of a payload during transit. Traditionally, plastic foams like expanded polystyrene (EPS) have been relatively effective insulators, although their use comes with numerous environmental challenges including remaining in landfills for centuries after disposal.
Enter the feather, which is made up of hollow, interlocking barbs that are very good at trapping still air — explaining their exceptional ability to insulate. When scientifically measured, feathers can have up to 15% lower thermal conductivity than EPS foam itself.
Creating Sustainable Solutions from Recycled Materials
PluumoPlus packaging solutions start their journey from post-consumer feather-filled clothing and bedding items, embracing the circular economy. Feathers are recycled from these items and converted into a patented high-performance insulation sheet. After being cut to size and covered in a biodegradable film for ease of handling, the PluumoPlus panels are placed inside standard shipping boxes and paired with the relevant cooling components to form complete solutions.
Natural Protection Without Compromise
PluumoPlus solutions have been developed across a range of temperature profiles, from 2–8°C to 15–25°C and dry ice solutions. One example in the dry ice configuration: a showdown between comparable solutions loaded with 22kg of dry ice showed that the feather-based solution kept below −20°C for over 120 hours under ISTA 7D Summer conditions, while the EPS-based solution managed 105 hours. This can translate into benefits such as reducing dry ice usage or increasing payload capacity, ultimately reducing costs, carbon emissions and plastic waste for cold chain logistics.
“Sustainability is a huge topic at the moment for the industry, so we’re excited to attend LogiPharma this year and share what is possible when using a natural material that was born to insulate. With PluumoPlus, we are redefining what is possible as you can now have both sustainability and performance without compromise,” said Ryan Robinson, Founder, PluumoPlus.
Feather facts you might not know:
- Feathers share the same building blocks as nails and hair — Feathers are made primarily of keratin, the same tough and flexible protein found in human hair and fingernails, giving them a unique combination of strength, lightness, and resilience.
- Feathers have been optimised over millions of years — It is now well established that feathers were already present on dinosaurs and originally evolved to keep creatures insulated, before further differentiating to assist in flight for birds.
- Feathers have helped humans survive some of the harshest climates on Earth — For centuries, down feathers have been used to insulate clothing and bedding in extreme environments. Early polar explorers relied on down-filled parkas and sleeping bags to endure sub-zero temperatures, and mountaineers summiting Everest still trust feather insulation at altitudes where synthetic materials often fall short.
